'Charity miles
program' aids transplant patients
Since
partnering with United Airlines in 1999, Transplant Recipients
International Organization (TRIO) and the airline have provided more
than 200 round-trip flights for transplant-related travel
to recipients, donors and their families. Thes trips
were possible due to donated frequent flyer miles in what is
called the "charity miles program."
To
participate, individuals must apply to TRIO at least four weeks
before travel is anticipated. Applicants must have a scheduled
appointment at a transplant center, and confirmation is required from
a transplant coordinator or social worker. To contact TRIO, visit www.trioweb.org, or call 1-800-TRIO-386.
It
takes about 50,000 frequent flyer miles to earn one
domestic ticket. To donate miles to TRIO, call United Airlines
at 1-800-421-4655.
