| Baltimore Kidney
Walk this Sunday
The third, and last, of our spring
Kidney Walks takes place this Sunday at the
Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. We currently
have more than $60,000 pledged for this walk.
Ron Matz of WJZ-TV will emcee, and our Walk
Ambassador Emily Biondi will join us as well. We
have lots of fun entertainment planned for the
whole family. Registration starts at 8 a.m., and
the walk begins at 9 a.m.
The May 4 Columbia Walk,
pictured above, raised $19,087, and our
Salisbury Walk on the same day brought in $15,824.
The walks help fund NKF-MD's patient programs
and services and research grants. To learn more
about the Kidney Walks, visit our website. |
Mr. Simon goes to
Washington
On April
15, 2008, NKF-MD board member Christopher Simon
traveled to Washington, DC to meet with some of
Maryland's congressional
representatives. Chris went to Capitol
Hill to encourage lawmakers to support legislation
that would extend Medicare coverage of medications
needed by transplant recipients to prevent organ
rejection.
Currently, Medicare coverage
of these vital medications ends 36 months after a
successful transplant. The National Kidney
Foundation has long advocated for allowing all
kidney transplant recipients to receive coverage
of these critical immunosuppressive drugs beyond
the current 36-month limit. As a
result of Simon's appeal, U.S. Sen. Barbara
Mikulski and Rep. C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger have
agreed to co-sponsor the Comprehensive
Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney
Transplant Patient Act of 2007 (H.R. 3282) (S.
2320).
Your voice can make a
difference in issues important to people with
kidney disease, and you can make yourself heard
without ever leaving home. NKF's Legislative
Action Center provides the latest information
about legislation and policy relating to chronic
kidney disease, transplantation and donation.
Featured action alerts allow
you to easily advocate to your members of Congress
on these issues. We invite you to become an NKF
patient advocate by joining our People Like Us
Take Action Network. We will email you when new
action alerts are posted and send you periodic
issue updates to keep you informed.

Research and
Scientific Session
held
The NKF-MD held its annual
Research and Scientific Session on May 15.
Eighteen recipients of NKF-MD research
grants presented their findings in a poster
session.
Our special guest
speaker was Peter Agre, M.D., recipient of
the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, pictured here
with Michael Sutters, M.D., at right, chair of the
Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Agre discussed
his research into aquaporins, or water-channel
proteins that move water molecules through the
cell
membrane. |
NKF-MD to hold its Annual
Meeting June 19 event to be held at Maryland
Historical Society
More than 100 volunteers will
be recognized at NKF-MD's Annual Meeting on
Thursday, June 19 at the Maryland Historical
Society. Three individuals, whose names will not
be announced in advance, will receive special
honors: the President's Award, Volunteer of
the Year, and the Linda Cameron Award for patient
services.
We appreciate the dedication of our many
hard-working
volunteers. |
| Donate a vehicle, help save
lives
The Kidney Cars program at NKF-MD is an
extremely important source of revenue for the
foundation. As a licensed wholesale automobile
dealer, NKF-MD sells donated vehicles at auction
or directly to dismantlers.
It's easy to donate a car. We will even tow
it for free. All donations are
tax-deductible. Please visit our website to learn more, or contact
