Three Beyond
Dialysis events took place on October
3rd throughout the NKF-MD region as a
means of offering support and inspiration to those
living with kidney disease.
Each exceeded the expectations
of providing a great time in addition to
patient-motivation and education. Click
here to view highlights which
demonstrate the tremendous impact each and every
NKF-MD volunteer and sponsor made in the lives of
our patients this day.

Second
annual Western Maryland Kidney Ride: An
adventure through the Great Allegheny
Passage
More than 60 riders
enjoyed the beautiful weather in late September
throughout the 2010
kidney ride in the mountains between
Cumberland and Frostburg. With the leaves
just beginning to change
colors on a cool but sunny day, the
event was a highlight of the annual
CanalFest/RailFest weekend.

Some opted
to ride to Frostburg on the historic Mountain
Thunder steam train and then cycle back to Canal
Place at the Western Maryland Railway Station in
Cumberland. Others pedaled up to Frostburg
and beyond before turning
back.
The
event brings in donations from riders and
corporate sponsors. It also results in
increased awareness of the local impact of kidney
disease. Click here to read

Local doctors
with connection to NKF-MD featured in
Baltimore Magazine's November 2010 Top
Doc's Issue
|
| Dr.
Robert Montgomery
|
The
most memorable save of Dr. Robert Montgomery,
M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S. and head of the John's
Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center, occurred
when he tried to sew a kidney into a woman who
lacked the necessary veins to support it.
The world-renowned transplant authority
improvised by attaching the kidney to a major vein
of the liver. Although out of place, it
functioned perfectly.
Dr.
Montgomery is perhaps most well known for
designing and executing the world's first
quintuple concurrent kidney swap. As an
honorary co-chair for the NKF-MD Rappel for Kidney
Health fundraiser in June 2010, he energized
VIP reception attendees with fascinating
remarks. This photo is credited to
Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Congratulations
to Dr. Tessie Behrens,
M.D.
Dr.
Behrens, of the Mid-Atlantic Nephrology Associates
in Catonsville, is a long-time dedicated member of
NKF-MD's Board of Directors and also oversees the
KEY Program, which screened over 600 people for
kidney disease this year in underserved areas
throughout Maryland. She is named a
"Top Doc" in the nephrology category in the
November 2010 Top Docs issue of Baltimore
Magazine. |

KEY
screenings: Especially beneficial this
year
This
year 13 KEY's (Kidneys: Evaluate Yours) community
health screenings evaluated 612 participants for
signs of kidney disease in the city
of Baltimore and its surrounding
counties. The screenings
in Maryland spread between Allegany
County to the west and Wicomico county
to the east. Medical supervisors, including
doctors and physician assistants, provided onsite
opportunities to discuss preliminary results.
All
participants were mailed complete results
of their lab tests.
Dr.
Raquel Greer, M.D., of Johns Hopkins Division of
Internal Medicine, is shown here working
with a patient at the Reisterstown Senior Center
screening. Click
